Mauritania: A Crossroads of Paths, a Village of Light
Bismillāh ir-Raḥmān ir-Raḥīm
In the heart of Western Maghreb, where the desert sketches endless horizons and the wind carries the memory of the sages, lies Mauritania a vast and humble land that holds within its silence an incomparable spiritual richness.
With a population of just over four million souls, Mauritania stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the depths of the Sahara. It borders Morocco and Western Sahara to the north, Algeria and Mali to the east, and Senegal to the south. This nation, blessed with an ancestral cultural diversity, has preserved the spirit of traditional knowledge and the transmission of sacred wisdom in a world that is increasingly fast-paced and disconnected.
Despite its economic and social challenges, Mauritania remains a place where the Qur’an is memorized as naturally as breathing, where madrassas and zawiyas flourish like oases, and where life still flows to the rhythm of dhikr, hospitality, the camel, and the Qur’an.

Ma-Atamoulana: The Hidden Pearl of the Desert
Among the many villages that honor the Islamic tradition in Mauritania, Ma-Atamoulana stands out for its light and dedication. This small village, seemingly insignificant on the map, is in fact a beacon that enlightens the hearts of hundreds of people who come each year in search of knowledge, spiritual guidance, and inner transformation.
At the heart of this community is the Michri family, a family blessed by Allāh ﷻ, known for their unwavering commitment to teaching the Book of Allāh, the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, and the paths of spiritual knowledge. Under the guidance of their elders, the children and grandchildren of this family continue to transmit with sincerity and perseverance the light they received from their ancestors.
This is not merely a school. Ma-Atamoulana is a spirit. It is a place where children learn the Qur’an, where youth discover the value of patience, and where elders reconnect with the meaning of life.

A Meeting Point of Nations and Hearts
One of the most beautiful signs of this village is that people from many nationalities from Europe, Latin America, Asia, and the Arab world have come to Ma-Atamoulana, driven by a sincere desire to learn. They have lived there, integrated into the community, and formed families with the local people, weaving a new, radiant community a blend of lands, accents, and memories.
Life together is simple and pure. People eat from the same dish. Pray in the same row. Honor the guest as a brother. And the marriages that have emerged between visitors and local residents are a reflection of the baraka that surrounds this place: a living testimony that Islam unites beyond languages, colors, and borders.
